Finally the WP 2.9.1! But…

I have dared to upgrade to version 2.9.1 and things have got much better. Nevertheless, some themes are no longer compatible since version 2.9 and their developers have quit. That’s the dark side of development, mainly if the core’s quality and performance of your application is depending on many plugins and themes…

From my side I have found out the marvellous flexibility of “Atahualpa“, a theme that will let you configure almost everything at the admin panel level. Really great, really free…

PlayStation3 browser

Certainly a matter which is nowadays mattering quite a lot to people very much interested on Internet surfing! The super-machine created by Sony and known by its war name of PS3 is no longer a single and exclusive video game console for kids.

For that reason I am deviating part of my total technological attention to this new black box which is already, besides its main application as a game console, also:

  • a CD and DVD player
  • a Blu-Ray player
  • an Internet browser

Being so, my first task was “how to detect the browser of PlayStation 3 and prepare webpages for it”. The first task was easily accomplished by a simple PHP line in an almost empty webpage:

echo $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'];

The result is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Playstation 3; 1.00)

which indicates by itself that webpages designed for Firefox will run quite well when called by a PS3. Usually, this is not that simple when we are talking about browsers, therefore I will keep investigating.

WordPress v2.9… to be forgotten!

Christmas 2009 is a date our fellows from WordPress.org should try to forget: after I have tried the upgrade to the latest release 2.9, my blog was just near to a fatal heart attack! In fact, this last version (Carmen, they say) is something I will bypass and I recommend everybody to follow this advice. For those still thinking the problem is my host provider, there it goes some info about the web server I am using:

  • OS Linux
  • PHP v5.2.11
  • MySQL v5.0.88

After this tsunami, WPv2.9, my actual version, WPv2.8.6, is now fully running again like it was since a couple of months, over a great theme called Freshy2(1) (download it here) from Julien de Luca (I strongly recommend as well). I even have tried a patch for WP2.9 (click here or you can download it here in INTERNET>DOWNLOAD), a medicine without side effects as much as without core effects (it simple didn’t work!).

There might be other workarounds or even patches for this last release but I really prefer be waiting for any 2.10 or 2.9+ version because I am sure the guys from WordPress.org will find out a solution very much up to their level of excellency(2). Even the good ones fail once in a while…

  1. It seems not compatible with WPv2.9 but I can assure you it is compatible up to 2.8.6. I left a comment in Jidé’s blog but it seems he has been very busy with his professional life and no longer has time for the WP theme! ↩
  2. I am using WordPress in several blogs for years. Since I started using WP, many have been the upgrades but it never happened before what is happening with v2.9. Nevertheless, even today I clearly state that WordPress is the best of the best for weblogs. ↩

Portuguese Translations for WP

I have started today placing in this blog’s Download page files containing the translation to Portuguese of some plugins and themes for WordPress (WP). They’re free to download and use. Any feedback regarding errors or inaccurate translations will be welcome.

Uploaded files are ZIPped and contain both .po and .mo files. Their filename give you the information if translation is relative to a plugin or a theme, the version of those and the version of the translation (nothing more than the date when translation was finished).
